What does the acronym "OPES" represent??
Olympic Peninsula Enological Society.
“OPES ONE”, the first event title, was a play on words.  It reinforced our organization's acronym, and described another feature appropriate to the musically tuned Port Townsend Scene:  The word “opus” is defined as “a creative work” which is numbered to indicate the order of composition, as by a musical composer.  "OPUS ONE" also happens to be the name of a rather dandy wine created jointly by two of the world’s greatest winemakers: a Frenchman, Phil Rothschild; the other, Robbie Mondavi from California.  What this means is that we will strive to have creativity in all our programs and offerings, and that this event was just the first!

When did OPES get started??

The first "official" organizational meeting of the Olympic Peninsula Enological Society was held on March 17th, 2002 at the home of Bob Bentley and Diane  Pickering in Port Townsend, WA.  This meeting was labeled "Official" because Bob and Diane, the foundation of the organization, had had many smaller brainstorming gatherings prior to this meeting.   The second organizational meeting was held on Monday, April 8th at Glen and Carol Wilhelm's home in Port Angeles.  By that time, the Bylaws had been written and the membership was over 30 members.

All events are designed for the enjoyment of all levels of wine appreciation - from beginners to experts -"high standards without snobbery is the over-riding intent!"  There will also be classes from time to time to increase everyone's knowledge

When and where are tastings, events, etc held??
Normally, tastings are scheduled on the last Friday of each month; but when special opportunities or scheduling conflicts arise, they can be scheduled on any day of the week.  Currently, all of the tasting are being held in the Port Angeles to Port Ludlow corridor since most of the members live in this area.  As the membership grows and other suitable location are found,  there is a possibility that some of the events will be held outside of this corridor.

What is a "blind" tasting and why do it?
A blind tasting is where the participates in the tasting are poured wine from bottles that have been covered to prevent knowing which vineyard, which verity, which vintage, etc  is being poured.  After the sniffing, tasting and evaluations have been completed the covers are removed from the bottles.  The reasons for doing blind tastings is that is easy to heap praise on the big names or the expensive bottles.  When all you have is the wine in a glass and your senses you will not be swayed by the hype and advertising and can truly judge the wines merits and your likes and dislikes.  A double blind tasting is where one person covers the wine bottles and a second person then puts the numbers on the sides of the bottles so that no one involved in the tasting knows which wine is which until after the evaluations.
